ARTS AND HEALTH
STAP Arts and Health Steering Group
Between 2006 and 2008 STAP ran an Arts and Health Steering Group. The formation of the Arts and Health steering group for Telford and Shropshire came out of the 2006 Time to Connect seminar evaluation (more information available on request.) This event was developed from work being done by the Shropshire and Telford Arts Partnership workforce development plan which identified the need to strengthen this sector of work. This initiative was supported by the strategic input of the Health Officer at Arts Council England, West Midlands.
Due to changes in local authority and Arts Council structures this steering group has currently been suspended, although some of the work that has been prompted by this group has continued.
The steering group's definition of Arts and Health was agreed as:
'Arts and Health, working in partnership to promote wellbeing by the use of arts-based approaches.'
The Shropshire and Telford Arts and Health Steering Group remit was to plan, organise and coordinate the development of the Arts and Health Sector in Shropshire and Telford by:
- Sharing strategic national and regional developments within the Arts and Health Sector
- Providing a vision for arts and health project development in Shropshire and Telford
- Raising the profile of arts and health practice with Shropshire and Telford and advocating for its development and diversity.
- Supporting people working as artists and within the health and social care sector to develop creative projects that improve the health and wellbeing of communities.
- Offering project funding advice for Arts and Health projects
Arts and Health Pilots
In 2007 STAP put up seed funding of £2000 for each local authority Arts Development Officer (ADO) to develop a project with the health sector that is issue led. These schemes highlighted the potential for each sector to work in a mutually beneficial way and make the strategic case for developing Arts and Health work locally and regionally.
Two key projects have emerged from this work:
- Telford and Wrekin - Visual Arts and Mental Health Wellbeing
Telford and Wrekin Council worked with Mental Health services on a pilot visual arts project that has been a catalyst for a number of other arts and health projects in Telford and has strengthened the relationship between Telford and Wrekin Council's Arts Service and the health sector. Telford and Wrekin Council now have an Arts and Health Development Officer in post to support this work.
- South Shropshire and Bridgnorth Dance4Health project.
This is a project that is still in development following a successful seminar with community dance leaders in June 2008. The project is a partnership between local authority Arts and Sports Services and Shropshire Primary Care Trust's (PCT) Active4Health GP referral scheme.
The project partners are currently exploring funding opportunities to deliver a proposal that would provide a training and support package for dance leaders who would like to have their dance classes included in the Active4Health GP referral scheme.
Please see below the document outlining the key findings from the seminar which have informed these plans.
